Prevalence of Lifetime Alcohol Dependence (DSM-IV)
The graph depicts prevalence of lifetime alcohol dependence as defined by DSM-IV. The vertical axis represents from zero to 25 percent, the prevalence of alcohol dependence. The horizontal line reflects age groups by males and females 18-24; 25-24; 35-44; 45-55; and 55 and older. Alcohol dependence was much higher among young adults under the age of 26. Rates of alcohol dependence amongst the five groups in the aforementioned order are approximated as follows: 25% males and 14% female; 24% male 14.75 females; 20.50% males and 8.50 females; 17.50 males and 6.50 females; and 9% males and 2.25% females.
