RSA Round-Up

R S A LogoOn June 26, 2011, Dr. Kenneth Warren, Acting Director of NIAAA, spoke to the Research Society on Alcoholism’s (RSA’s) 34th Annual Scientific Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, kicking off 4 days of scientific presentations, poster sessions, and collegial exchange. The RSA Annual Meeting is an important conference for NIAAA because it gives program staff an opportunity to interact directly with grantees and scientists from the alcohol research field.

NIAAA College Presidents Working Group

Photo of members of the College Presidents Working GroupNIAAA held a successful kickoff meeting of the new NIAAA College Presidents Working Group on May 25, 2011. The Working Group aims to bring national attention to the college drinking issue and to make relevant recommendations to college administrators. It is cochaired by Dr. Jim Yong Kim, President of Dartmouth College, and Dr. Robert Carothers, immediate past president of the University of Rhode Island.

Update on SUAA Workgroup

On June 9, 2011, NIH principal deputy director Dr. Lawrence Tabak presented an update on the activities of the Substance, Use, Abuse, and Addiction (SUAA) Task Force to NIAAA’s National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The SUAA Task Force had recommended on November 16, 2010, that NIH create a new Institute focusing on substance use, abuse, and addiction research, and that the relevant research portfolios from NIAAA, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and other NIH Institutes be integrated into this new Institute.
