NIH Announces Changes for Funding Applications

On September 16, as part of an effort to enhance the peer review of applications, NIH announced changes to its funding application forms and instructions. Changes are divided into two categories: shortened page limits and better alignment of the application with review criteria. In general, changes apply to all research grant, cooperative agreement, career, and fellowship applications, but not to training applications. Applicants should read the new instructions carefully to ensure full understanding of their implications. Peer review enhancements began in January 2009 and will culminate with a restructuring and shortening of applications submitted. All competing applications due on or after January 25, 2010—including resubmissions, revisions, and renewals—must use the new forms and adhere to the new page limits and instructions.
