In celebration of its 40th anniversary, NIAAA invited distinguished researchers from across the alcohol research spectrum to participate in a symposium on October 4, 2010. Acting NIAAA Director, Dr. Kenneth Warren, opened the symposium by discussing the current breadth of alcohol research and the significant progress made over the past 40 years.

 

NIAAA Scores at the USA Science &
Engineering Expo

U S A Science and Engineering Festival LogoOn October 23–24, 2010, NIAAA took part in the first annual USA Science & Engineering Expo in Washington, DC. With an estimated 500,000 visitors, the free 2-day event featured famous scientists, demonstrations, and lots of hands-on activities. It included exhibitions from both the public and private sectors—the NIH, NASA, the Department of Energy, Lockheed Martin, Northrup Grumman, PBS Kids, among others.

 

New National Advisory Council Members Welcomed

Photo of Doctor Gyongi SzaboNIAAA welcomed two new members to its National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism at its 124th meeting in June.

Dr. Gyongyi Szabo is Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for clinical and translational research and also serves as Director of the Hepatology and Liver Center at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

New Course in Psychopathology and Behavioral Evaluation

Photo of Vatsalya VatsalyaVatsalya Vatsalya M.D., M.S., P.G.D., of the Section on Human Psychopharmacology, will be the principal instructor for a new course originated by NIAAA to be offered at the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences (FAES) Graduate School at NIH.

 

 

Scientific Management Review Board Vote on Merger

On September 15, 2010, the Scientific Management Review Board (SMRB) voted 12 to 3 in favor of a structural merger that would combine NIAAA and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). The new entity would focus on all addictions, from alcohol and drugs to tobacco, as well as gambling and compulsive eating.

South Korea Site Visit Explores Potential Collaboration for FASD Researchers

Photo of Doctor Ken Warren in KoreaDr. Warren was among a team of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) researchers who completed an exploratory site visit to Seoul, South Korea, to lay the groundwork for adding Korea as a site for the NIAAA-funded Collaborative Initiative on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (CIFASD).

NIAAA Participates in Drug Facts Chat Day

NIAAA participated in this year’s National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Drug Facts Chat Day on November 9. Kids from middle and high schools from around the country were given the chance to ask questions about drugs and alcohol and get answers in a real-time chat.
